Food and Shelter
The three big things you need to survive in the world are enough to eat, and a place to stay, but if you ever want to be more then a bum on the street you'll need a SIN too.
Rent is paid monthly (Every 30 in game days, a tracker at the bottom of your posts will help with that), and out of character Gen your rent is paid up for that month. The total cost of a "Lifestyle" includes rent, food, utilities and some expenses (the higher the lifestyle the more if covers). But for those of you below middle life style there is somethign you should know about your food, it's not really what we, today, think of as food. Most food in the world of Shadowrun is some blend of soy or krill composite, with artifical flavors to make it pass for something resembling food. Real food is scarcely available with a middle lifestyle and regularly available at a high lifestyle.
System Identification Numbers
Real SINs are extremely dangerous, since they contain full copies of your biometrics (DNA, fingerprints, blood screening, medical history etc) so most people who make their living illegally have either destoryed theirs or were born without them. But to pass outside of the Barrens, a SIN is necessary. That's where fakes come in. A fake SIN has a rating, which is the skill of the forgery, any where from 1 - 6 Fake SINs are not only illegal but extremely expensive the better the quality. Rating 1-5 SINs contain false biometrics, a Rating 6 SIN contains your real biometrics and is almost impossible to break. A Rating 4 SIN should be able to get you in and out the Barrens with ease, and is extremely unlikely to be revealed in most places that you will travel other then high security areas.
Entering and exit through different areas of the city (each district is divided by a series of check points that all people crossing through must pass) or in and out of secure buildings your SIN will be checked and in most cases so long as you're not acting suspicious, and the scanner doesn't throw up any red flags when it reads your SIN then you should have no problems. If a scanner detects an error or labels your SIN as forged it will be marked in the system and using it again will be impossible, at that point burning is your only option.
Licenses can also be added to a SIN, they act as registration, such as any mage over Magic 3 must be registered, so any mage over magic three will need the corresponding License on their fake SIN. The same goes for any piece of gear that is labeled as R for restricted, other good licenses to have are concealed carry, and licenses for bioware and cyberware implants.
Bioware and Cyberware
"We have the technology" well now we really mean it. Just about anything in a person can be replaced in this modern setting from full limbs to internal organs to augments to increase natural abilities and limits. Bioware is grown and synthesized where as cyberware is a purely mechanical construction.
Ware in general is extremely expensive to buy and can be very expensive to repair. Beyond that, there is only so much of a human that can be replaced before the lack of organic nervous input starts to effect the host. Individuals are given a total of 6 Essence (with few very complicated exceptions you don't need to know about) and the more ware you pack into your body the more essence you eat up. Once loss essence cannot simple be regained by upgrading ware (which takes less essence) but it however can free a portion (the difference between the old essence cost and the lesser new cost) of that essence back up to be used for something else.
The less essence you have, the harder it is to retain empathy, emotional connection and sympathy, but for some people that just makes the work easier.
Knight Errant
Knight Errant are the national security agency hired by the UCAS. Commonly just referred to as "K.E." these coppers will be the ones you see at check points, crime scenes and hired security provided by the city.
The city as a whole has been broken up into districts called AAA (1-6 minutes), AA (5-10 minutes), A (5-15 minutes), B (5-30 minutes), C (10 minutes - 1 hour) and Z (2-12 hours), in order of highest to lowest priority. The higher the area's priority, the faster the response time. So keep that in mind if you're going to do anything questionable, you'll want to know how fast the fuzz is going to get there.
Shadowrunning
In a world where the phrase "questionable morals" is so devastatingly inadequate to describe the general populace, hiring people to perform illegal acts is almost common place, so long as you can avoid being tied to the act and it's perpetrator. So a client, someone with the money to afford to hire someone to do their dirty work, hires a Johnson. A Johnson is someone who is paid to see that the client's wishes are observed but can still meet with the client without raising eyebrows. The Johnson then hires a Fixer, a person who is fairly well connected to various people with skills suited to illegal workings. And that's where the Shadowrunners come in, professional criminals who answer when their fixer calls, head to a meet with the Johnson to accept the job and get what details they can before doing their best to get the job done so they can get paid.
If you would like to be more then some guy on the street who can do something the first thing you're going to want to do is to get your name on some fixer's list, so you can start getting jobs from people who can actually pay your rent.
